WRESTLING: 2020-21 Season Preview

9/15/20

Head Wrestling Coach, Mike Sebaaly, is eager to introduce a large new recruiting class for the 2020-21 academic year. Although the season has been pushed to January, there is still excitement in Coeur d’Alene, ID as the team starts the academic year looking toward securing the teams 15th NJCAA National Championship.

At 125, there are six incoming Cardinals that will challenge for the top spot this season. Two-time champion, Walker Dyer of Frenchtown, MT; local Caden Hess, a state champ out of Lake City High School in Coeur d’Alene, ID; Temuujin Natsagdorj, who flew the furthest to get here from Mongolia where he was a national placer joins the team; two-time California state placer, Izzy Tubera; Miguel Luna out of Sunnyside, California and Davis Sunken of Minnesota both add depth to this very competitive weight class.

The copious amount of lightweight talent continues for NIC in the 133-weight class. Jake Bibler, a two-time state champion out of Frenchtown, MT will be joined by fellow Montana state champion, Matthew DeWitt. Two-time state champion and NHSCA All-American, Brant Porter, comes to the Pacific Northwest from Hawaii. Locals, Jordan Grimm, a state champ from Post Falls, ID and Matthew McGuire from Spokane, WA join the team.

Jose Orlando Rubio of Sunnyside, Arizona is one of the top newcomers who will compete with returner Alex Lopez and Zack Granly for the spot at 141. Rubio is a former age group team member in Cuba who has won a world medal in UWW competition. Elijah Marquez and Bryson Anderson are two WA state placers who may push for the spot at 141 alongside East Valley’s Avery Sundheim.

The 149 spot will be manned this year for the Cards by returning All-American Sal Silva. Blake Garcia, an Idaho state placer and Cameron Rosalin, a Washington state placer, will provide depth and learn behind Sal for the season. Parker Corwin, a former NCAA Division I wrestler may see action at 141 or 157 this season.

At 157, the squad brings intense talent from California with Brandon Bollinger and Hunter Gonzalez, both set to compete with Weston Presser, a state champ out of Nevada for the spot.

Bryce Archer out of Oregon; Matt Bakes, an Idaho state placer; Ryan Quimby, a state runner-up out of Idaho; Colby Guzman out of Washington; Nolan Casey, a state champion out of Washington; and state champ Mani Wolfgramm of Hawaii, all look to fill the 165 spot for the Cards.

Returning national qualifier, Navarro Nanpuya, will likely hold down the 174 spot for NIC. Nanpuya will be challenged, however, by incomer Ledger Petracek of California; Morgan McFee of Washington; Tucker Wetherman of Washington; and Caden Yrkoski of Nebraska.

At 184, Sebaaly looks to replace the two-time All-American, Hunter Gregerson. Spot starter, Isaac Gomez, will be challenged for time on the mat by returner Peyton Whipple, Mikey Rhea of Washington, and Ethan Wright of Arizona.

The 197 spot will see state champ, Johnny Franke of Darrington, WA and three-time state champ, Amadeo Pimentel of Selah, WA compete for the spot.

Finally, at 285 the Cardinals return All-American Cohle Feliciano. JJ Rodriguez, a state placer in Washington, will learn behind Felicano for the year.

Later this fall, the squad will release the season’s schedule. Many events are still up in the air as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.
