MEN'S BASKETBALL: Successful opening weekend for the Cards

The North Idaho College men’s basketball team won their first two games of the 2019-20 season on Nov. 15 and 16 at the Harold C. Williams Sr. Invitational Basketball Tournament in Portland, Oregon.

In Friday night’s opener, six Cardinals scored in double-figures, including four with over 20 points in a 116-92 victory over Chemeketa Community College. Sophomores Joey Naccarato and Jaden Dewar led the way with 23 points apiece while sophomore Yusuf Mohamed recorded a double-double with 22 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore Emmit Taylor III hit four of seven from beyond the arc for his 20 points while sophomores James Carlson and Phillip Malatare each tossed in 11.

Saturday night saw the Cards pull out a thrilling 76-75 victory over the host Portland Community College Panthers. NIC led 38-31 at the half but PCC came roaring back to lead by four with 11 minutes remaining. In all, the score was tied 12 times with the lead changing hands eight times. In the closing seconds, the Panthers needed a three-pointer to tie the game but drove the lane instead for a layup as time expired.

Mohamed led the charge with his second-consecutive double-double. The sophomore tossed in 16 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Malatare filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Sophomores Ismael Valdez and Taylor III also hit double-digit scoring with 10 points apiece.

The Cardinals are back in action for their home-opener Nov. 29 and 30 at the CdA Inn-vitational. The Cards will play at 7:30 p.m. on both nights.
