WRESTLING: NIC crowns three champions at Northwest Open


The North Idaho College Wrestling team attended their first tournament of the season, the Trapper Open, on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. Western Wyoming Community College, recently ranked first in the NJCAA wrestling poll released earlier in the week, was also in attendance at the tournament.

The Cards crowned three champions on Saturday, two true freshmen, Isaac Lopez (125) and Navarro Nanpuya (165), both continued strong starts in their college careers with impressive tournament victories. In the finals, Lopez defeated Rob Pair, the NAIA 11th ranked wrestler in the country out of Montana State University-Northern, 9-3. Navarro Nanpuya had an 11-4 victory over the seventh-ranked NJCAA wrestler in the country, Javier Tapia, to win the championship bout. Jacob Swift also went 4-0 on the day with three bonus-point victories to win the 157-pound title at the Northwest Open.

The Cardinals had one other finalist, Sam Peterson (285), and five others place in the top four during the season-opening tournament. Alex Lopez (141), Sal Silva (149) and Alan Badley (174) finished third in their respective weight classes. Isaac Gomez (184) and Cohle Feliciano (285) finished fourth.

The team is in action next at the Mike Clock Open on Sunday, Nov. 17 in Forest Grove, Oregon.
