SOFTBALL: Mott's perfect game gets Cardinals off to a fast start


In their first game, Madi Mott led the Cardinals to an 11-0 victory over Columbia Basin. Mott threw a perfect game for the Cardinals, facing 15 batters and striking out 6. NIC’s offense put up 11 runs and had 10 hits on the game. Bri Hecker and Sarah Williams hit back to back homeruns in the 2nd inning. Both Sarah Williams and Taylor Anderson had great days at the plate going 2 for 2. Anderson hit a single, double and had one walk in the game. Williams had the 2nd inning homerun, a double, and a walk. Ashlyn Winn also had a 2-run homerun. The Cardinals clinched the perfect win in 5 innings with an 11-0 final score. 


In their second game, NIC defeated CBC again in 5 innings, with a final score of 11-2. Andrea Hoey picked up the win for the Cardinals as she pitched 4 out of 5 innings and Betty Comack came in to finish the game in the 5th inning. The Cardinals offense was hot, lead by Devinnne Amesquita who hit a grand slam in the 4th inning. Bailey Cavanagh matched Amesquita’s grand slam by hitting a solo homerun in the next at bat. Jori Kerr had three singles, going 3 for 3 in the game. In the 5th inning, Ashlyn Winn hit a 2-run homerun for the Cardinals.


On Sunday, the Cardinal’s beat Wenatchee Valley in 5 innings in the first game, with a final score of 13-1. Mott picked up the win as she pitched 4 of the 5 innings. Kenzie Wilson, a freshman, came in and closed out the game in the 5th inning. Between the two pitchers, there was only 2 hits recorded for WVC. For the Cardinal’s offense, JJ Hammond went 3 for 3 with a two singles and a double. Devinne Amesquita also went 3 for 3 at the plate, with a single, double and a homerun. The Cardinals had 13 runs with 14 hits.


NIC dropped their last game on Sunday to Wenatchee Valley, 14-16. After getting behind by 11 runs in the 5th inning, Ashlyn Winn came in clutch with a grand slam to extend the game and keep the Cardinals fighting. In the 6th inning, Winn also had another 2-run homerun. Devinne Amesquita had a 2-run homerun in the 7th to bring the Cardinals to 14 runs. Bri Hecker also had a great day at the plate going 3 for 4, with two singles and a homerun.
