NWAC Basketball Tournament Brackets Announced

March Madness begins in the NWAC this week with the NIC Men and Women's Basketball teams qualifying for post season. The NWAC top ranked and undefeated East Region Champion NIC men's team will open the tournament on Thursday, March 7 at 10:00am against Clackamas Community College at Everett Community College. The Cougars (20-8, 10-6 NWAC South) come in as the 4th seed from the NWAC South Region. With a victory on Thursday, the Cardinals would face the winner of Centralia CC and Edmonds CC on Friday, March 8,  at 1:00pm. 

The Cardinals come into the tournament on an 18 game winning streak after sweeping through the NWAC East with a perfect 16-0 record. NIC has been the unanimous #1 ranked team in the NWAC in each poll this season, and have an overall record of 27-2. The Cards are led by returning NWAC MVP RayQuan Evans, at 17.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Fellow guard Nate Pryor leads the Cards in scoring at 18.8 points a game, while adding 5.1 assists. Sophomore wing Alphonso Anderson nearly averages a double-double with 15.3 pints and 8.2 rebounds a contest. Sharp shooting guard Emmitt Taylor III is instant offense off the bench, averaging 14.0 points on 43% shooting from 3 point range. Sophomore post Jared Green leads the NWAC in field goal percentage at 70.4%, scoring 9.1 points a game. As a team the Cards average 105 points, while shooting 53.3% from the field.  

The Lady Cards open the NWAC tournament on Saturday, March 9, at 2:00pm against the South region champion, Umpqua CC. The Cards lost a tough game at home to Umpqua (25-4 overall, 14-2 NWAC) in the NWAC Crossover tournament in December, 83-72 in overtime. NIC comes in ranked #6 in the NWAC final poll, with a 20-8 overall record and 3rd place tie in the NWAC East at 10-6. The Lady Cards are led by the inside post duo of Keara Simpson (12.7 points and 9.5 rebounds) and Heidi Sellman (13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds). Guard Alivia Williams leads the Cards in scoring at 14.1 points per game, and Alex Carlton averages 10.6 points per contest on 46.2% shooting from 3 pint range.

If the Lady Cardinals are victorious on Saturday they will face the winner of Whatcom CC and Grays Harbor CC on Sunday at 3:00pm.

The NWAC Final 4 and Championship games will be played the following weekend at Everett Community College on Saturday and Sunday, March 16-17.
