MEN’S BASKETBALL: Cards open title defense with a win

In a pre-game ceremony, the Cardinals received their NWAC Championship rings and then preceded to show why they’ll be one of the favorites this year as well with a 98-54 victory over Peninsula College Saturday night on Rolly Williams Court.

NIC beat the Pirates last March in overtime 90-83 to claim their first-ever NWAC Championship in Everett overcoming a 20-point, second-half deficit.

With a well-rounded effort, the Cardinals excelled on both ends of the court, holding the Pirates to 25% shooting while forcing 13 turnovers while offensively, shooting 54% from the field and outrebounded the Pirates 48-28.
Freshman Emmitt Taylor III led all scorers with 23-points coming off the bench to hit 7 of 10 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Alphonso Anderson added 20 points and 7 rebounds while Sophomore Ray Quan Evans, last year’s Tournament MVP, tossed in 18 points while handing out 5 assists.

Assistant coach George Swanson, on the Coach “G” Post-Game Show, said the Cardinals worked hard on their defensive preparation:
