MEN'S SOCCER: NIC kicks off league season

09/09/2018

After a rough start to the regular season, the Cardinals got off to a solid start in league play.  On Friday, the Cardinals tied Treasure Valley CC after falling 1-0 just before the half.  At the 49 minute mark, Noah Dreves found Mac Stultz between the center backs.  Stultz took and ran with the ball for about 15 yards, and calmly put the ball away in the left half of the net.  Luis Hernandez had a strong showing in goal in the first half, only giving up a goal on a penalty kick and recording three saves.  Isaiah Damschen played the second half in goal, but the Cardinal defense prevented the Chukars from getting any shots on goal.

On Saturday, the Cardinals picked up their first win of the season against Blue Mountain CC.  The Cardinals outshot the Timberwolves 15-8 and won 2-0.  In the 58th minute, Conner Wold took a corner kick and the rebound went directly to Ezra Grossglauser.  Grossglauser volleyed a hard shot on goal and center back Zach Bowsky put the rebound in the net for the 1-0 lead.  In the 82nd minute, Japheth Taylor broke free up the middle, but the Timberwolves took him down a yard outside the penalty area.  Josh Greer’s free kick went low and to the right to make it 2-0.  Isaiah Damschen recorded seven saves, the shutout, and the win.

On Saturday, the Cardinals host Wenatchee Valley College at home at 2:15pm.
