WRESTLING: Five Cardinals earn All-American honors at NJCAA National Tournament

The Cardinal Wrestling team took to the mat for the final event this season in the NJCAA National Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In total, 47 teams and nearly 320 athletes across 10 weight classes took to the mats competing for individual and team awards. From the Cardinals, 9 NJCAA National Qualifiers represented the school. Of the 9 North Idaho College participants, 5 Cards earned All-American honors by placing in the top 8 of their respective weight classes and helped lead the team to a total tournament score of 80.5, putting them into the top 6 in the team race.

From the qualifiers, the following Cardinals earned All-American Honors:

125: Esco Walker – 7th

157: Thomas Stevenson – 6th

165: Jacob Swift – 5th

184: Levi Perry – 2nd

285: Damian Trujillo – 4th

Among the qualifiers were freshmen Austin Iorga, Christian Grover, Trager Abatti, as well as Brent Evans, a sophomore. Evans wrestled with a heartbreaking injury which inhibited his ability to compete at 100% during the tournament in the form of a broken ankle. Evans was the No. 3 ranked 149 competitor in the country coming into the competition. Within the qualifiers, Trager Abatti had a great showing in the 174 lb weight class on the weekend, going 3-2 and losing in the round of All-Americans.

This group of five All-Americans have now joined the company of 235 total All-Americans and 54 National Champions over the rich history of the NIC Wrestling program.
