NIC Athletics Department Academic Award Celebration

The NIC Athletics Department hosted the annual Faculty-Staff Appreciation Night as part of the NWAC basketball doubleheader against Big Bend Community College on February 14th, 2018. As part of the ceremony the college recognized athletics academic honor roll recipients, and presented awards to faculty and staff members of the year.

To earn a spot on the Athletics Department Honor Roll a student-athlete must attain a GPA of over 3.0 for at least 12 semester credit hours. We are proud to announce that 76 student-athletes in the Cardinals athletic program met this criteria for the 2017 fall semester, including 8 members of the Dean’s List, which is 3.75 or better. In addition, the Ace Walden award is presented to all teams that achieve a team GPA of over 3.0 for the year. This past semester three teams exceeded this benchmark and are halfway to earning Academic All-America team recognition for the year: Women’s Golf, Women’s Soccer, and Women’s Basketball.

Our faculty, staff and administration at NIC are an integral part of the development of the student-athletes at NIC, on and off the court or playing field. Each year we ask our coaches and student-athletes to nominate the faculty or staff person that has provided outstanding inspiration, support and contribution to the program throughout the year.

The Floyd “Rosie” Rosenlund Award, presented to an exceptional member of the NIC staff, goes to Matt Burns. A member of the Physical Plant Department for almost 3 years, Burns has provided assistance well beyond the norm to ensure the NIC fields are in exceptional condition. Burns was also a member of the Men’s Soccer program in 2009.

This year’s Warren “Squirt” Keating Faculty Award winner goes to Sargent First Class Dannie Swanson, a member of the Physical Education Department. Swanson teaches Military Science on the campus, and represents the Idaho National Guard. Swanson was highly responsible for creating team building exercises utilized by all of the Cardinal intercollegiate teams, and obtaining government funding to obtain the drop-down USA Flag in Christianson Gym and new National Guard wrestling mats.

Congratulations to our award recipients and student-athletes on an exceptional first semester.
