MEN'S BASKETBALL: Second-half defense keys road victory

01/25/2018

The defense stepped up big-time in the final 20 minutes leading the North Idaho College Cardinals to a 76-65 road victory over Wenatchee Valley College Wednesday night in a key East Division matchup.  Trailing 40-36 at the half, the 5th-ranked Cardinals outscored the Knights 40-25 in the second half, holding Wenatchee Valley (11-8, 4-3) to 28% shooting and 3 of 15 (20%) from beyond the arc.

Offensively, the night belonged to Jalen Burkett. The sophomore poured in a career-high 30 points on 9 of 16 shooting. Burkett was rock-solid from the line as well, going 12 of 18.

North Idaho, Spokane, Yakima Valley and Wenatchee Valley all entered play Wednesday night tied for second with 4-2 conference marks, one game behind 5-1 Walla Walla.

I was excited on how the guys responded defensively in the second half,” said Head Coach Corey Symons. “That was a big win for us.”

NIC is now tied with Spokane for second in the NWAC East at (5-2), a game behind (6-1) Walla Walla. The Cardinals host Blue Mountain CC this Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is at 4pm.
