MEN'S SOCCER: Hernandez stops CBC

10/19/2017

Luis Hernandez made eleven saves for the Cardinals yesterday, and Omar Hernandez headed a corner kick off the bottom of the crossbar in the 87th minute for the game winner over Columbia Basin. Coming into the game the Hawks were ranked third in the NWAC and at the top of the East Division, but the Cardinals defended well, created quality opportunities, and performed at crucial moments of the game. After a scoreless first half, Oscar Padilla served a free kick into the Hawks’ penalty area as Conner Kinnune snuck in behind the defense. Kinnune’s header put the Cardinals up 1-0 in the 60th minute. In the 70th minute, CBC’s Isaiah Arechiga tied it up when the Cardinals failed to clear a rebound from the box. The Cardinals appeared to have a go ahead goal from Parker Gorrill in the 74th, but he was offside by a step as the ball was played forward. Needing a goal, the Cardinals shifted formations and pulled Armando Perez from the back line in the remaining minutes. After keeping the ball in the attacking half for the majority of the final 20 minutes, the Cardinals earned a corner kick. Oscar Padilla found Omar Hernandez for the game winner in the 87th minute. Hernandez’s header hit the bottom of the crossbar, went down, and bounced up into the net.

The Cardinals travel to Walla Walla Saturday and need a win to remain in playoff contention.
