SOFTBALL: NIC goes 4-2 in season opening tournament


The softball team headed south to Clermont, Fl to participate in the Spring Games. In the season opener the Cardinals came out strong against Davenport University JV with a win of 16-2. Kayla Moore earned her 1st win on the season in the circle. Kayla Curtan went 3-4 at the plate and scored 4 runs. In game two NIC faced University of Northwestern – St. Paul JV. The Cardinals continued their offensive assault with a victory of 16-1 with McKensie Brittos earning her first collegiate win in the circle. Ana Raynor went 3-4 with a one triple and scored 3 runs. Nikki Miller hit a 3 run home run in the 2nd inning.

The first lost of the season for the Cardinals was against Muskegon Community College by a score of 6-4. The Cardinals made a run at MCC in the 7th inning but came up short with Kennedy Anderson hitting a solo home run, McKensie Schaller hitting a double and Ana Raynor knocking her in with a single.

In the next game the Cardinals faced off against West Virgina Wesleyan College JV. The Cardinals came out on top winning 10-3. The Cardinals made a 6th inning push to close the game out with Nikki Miller leading off with a single, Kennedy Anderson hitting a single and Kalyna Korok hitting a three run home run. Megan Carver then restarting the inning with a single, Jamie Yurick earned a base on balls and Kayla Curtan knocked Carver and Korok in with a single.

In the 5th game, NIC earned a win in extra innings against NJCAA Mercyhurst North East. With a tie game in the 7th of 3-3 the Cardinals pushed a run across in the bottom of the 8th with the international tie breaker rule in which a runner starts at second base. Ana Raynor scored the game winning run with a single by Kennedy Anderson.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals dropped a great game vs. NJCAA Kalamazoo Valley Community College in the bottom of the 7th 9-10. Megan Carver had a two-run double in the top of 7th inning to tie the game. Unfortunately, the Cardinals could not hold of Kalamazoo in the bottom of the 7th



The Cardinals will be in action again on March 17th in Ontario, Oregon vs. Treasure Valley Community College for the NWAC opener.
