WRESTLING: Cardinals earn 3 All-Americans. Finish 14th
Freshman Levi Perry finished in 3rd place, and the Cardinals earned 3 All-Americans on their way to a 14th place finish at the NJCAA Wrestling tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Iowa Central claimed its eighth NJCAA wrestling national title in dramatic fashion in the last match of the day. Region 18 rival Clackamas Community College led Iowa Central 146.5 to 144 heading into the heavyweight bout. Iowa Central's Thomas Peterson got a pin in the match to clinch the national title for the Tritons. Defending champion Northeastern Oklahoma A&M finished in 3rd place with 140. The Cardinals finished with 45 points, earning points from all 7 wrestlers that qualified.
Freshman Trey Meyer (165 lbs) placed 5th and sophomore Alex Aguilar (174 lbs) placed 7th to also earn All-American honors for the Cardinals. Perry lost a tough bout to the tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler, Preston Lauterbach of Iowa Western in the quarterfinals, but battled back to place 3rd in the 184 weight class.
North Idaho will return 6 of the 7 national qualifiers to go along with returning 285 2016 All-American Damian Trujillo to challenge for a title next season. With the 3 All-Americans from this year's team NIC has now earned 230 Wrestling All-Americans in the history of the program.
The Cardinals will be honored at the NIC Booster Club luncheon on Tuesday, February 28th, at the CDA Resort at noon. The public is welcome to attend.
