WRESTLING: Cardinals in 14th Place at Nationals After Day One
Heading into NJCAA Wrestling National Championships as the 7th ranked team in the nation, the NIC Wrestling team had an outside chance of winning their 15th national championship. However after struggling in the second round, the Cardinals find themselves in 14th place heading into the second day of the tournament, with only one wrestler in contention for an individual title. Trey Meyer (165 lbs.) advances to the semi-finals after defeating Tucker Black (NIACC), 5-3, in the quarterfinals. Levi Perry (184 lbs) lost in the quarterfinals to Preston Lauterbach (Iowa Western CC) and will compete in the consolation bracket today. Alex Aguilar (174 lbs) is the only other remaining Cardinal still competing, and will also be in the consolation bracket.
The Cardinals started the day strong, advancing 6 of 7 wrestlers to round two, with 5 wins and a bye, However, only two Cardinals could earn a victory in the championship round, and 4 others were eventually eliminated in the consolation bracket before Day 2.
Northeast Oklahoma leads with 93 points, followed by Iowa Central (91) and Region 18 rival Clackamas CC with 83.5 points. Trey Meyer will face a familiar opponent in the semi-finals today when he squares off with Dillon Ulrey of Clackamas. Ulrey defeated Meyer in the Region 18 semi-finals two weeks ago.
