Lady Cardinals Basketball finish LCC Holiday Classic with a win
The North Idaho College Lady Cardinals tied for third place at the Lower Columbia College Holiday Classic by beating Centralia College 74-47 on Friday, December 30, in Longview, WA. The Lady Cardinals had previously advanced to the semi-finals by beating Highline Community College on Wednesday, December 28. They almost qualified for the championship game but lost to host Lower Columbia College in a barn burner on Thursday, December 29. Initial bracketing paired NIC against NWAC Eastern Division foe Yakima Community College for third place. According to tournament rules, no opponents from the same division could play each other so NIC squared off against Centralia College and Yakima CC took on Highline CC with the winners tying for third place. In the championship game, host Lower Columbia College beat the #1 ranked team in the NWAC, Umpqua Community College by three points.
In the win over Centralia College, freshmen Lana Berg and Gia Sorn proved a strong inside threat each finishing with 12 points. Freshman Eilish Smith added 11 points. Freshman Cierra Dvorak contributed 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Freshman Shelby Jordan led all rebounders with 7. Freshman Whitney Meier again led all players with 4 assists. The Lady Cardinals outrebounded Centralia College by 11 while forcing the Trailblazers into 25% shooting overall. Lana Berg was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts throughout the entire tournament.
The Lady Cardinals are now 7-4 overall and are preparing for their NWAC Eastern Division home opener against Yakima Community College on January 7. Tip-off is at 2:00 PM with the men's game following at 4:00 PM.
