Russell Grove is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Cardinal golf program for both the women’s and the men’s team. Grove attended Coeur d’Alene High School where he helped the Vikings win the 5A State Golf Championship in 2004. He received a golf scholarship to the University of Idaho where he served as a team captain and led the Vandals to their best finish in the history of the Western Athletic Conference at the time. Grove was a three-time recipient of the WAC Scholar Athlete Award and a three-time selection on the WAC Academic All-Conference team. At the University of Idaho, Grove set the 36-hole and 54-hole record with scores of 131 and 203, respectively. In addition, he set the UI course record with a score of 62.

Grove turned professional in 2009 after he graduated from UI and qualified for the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 PGA Professional Championship. Grove won the 2017 Oregon Open, the 2017 PNW PGA Championship, the 2018 PNW PGA championship and has been the three-time recipient of the Omega Player of the Year for the Northwest states (2017, 2018, 2019). Grove remains currently ranked as the #1 PGA playing professional in the Pacific Northwest.

Grove coached the NIC women’s team to the NWAC championship title in 2016 and the NIC men’s team to the NWAC championship title in 2017, 2018, and 2019 (retaining a 131-8 conference record during those years). Grove was nominated as the NWAC coach of the year for 2018 and received the Team of the Year award for the 2016-2017 and 2018-2019 seasons.


The Avondale Golf Club, in Hayden, Idaho, is the Cardinal's home course. The program also uses Twin Lakes GC, The Links GC, Prairie Falls GC, and the Coeur d'Alene Municipal golf course as practice and playing facilities.

Assistant Coach

Dan Porter enters his seventh season as assistant golf coach. He is the head golf professional at Avondale Golf and Tennis Club, a position he has held since 2000. He is also a PGA member and a class A-1 instructor.

Porter earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Eastern Washington University where he also played on the varsity golf team. He attended Mead High School and was captain of the golf team and was named most valuable player in the Greater Spokane League.

Porter has also worked at Downriver, Indian Canyon, Manito Golf and Country Club, and Wandermere golf courses. He has received numerous awards throughout his career.

He and his wife Debbie have three children, Taylor, Chelsea, and Michael.

Assistant Coach

Russ is entering his fourth year with helping the men’s and women’s golf teams. Grove has 20 years of experience coaching multiple sports. He graduated from Thomas Edison HS in Alexandria, Virginia and Northern Virginia Community College. He returned in 2017 and is presently working as a course marshal at Avondale Golf Course and as a courtesy driver for Parker Toyota. Grove enjoys all sports, loves coaching, and is married to his wife, Karen, and has two sons, Russell and Sam.
