Athletic Training Staff

Athletic trainers help to enhance the quality of health care for athletes and those engaged in physical activity by preventing, evaluating, managing and rehabilitating injuries. For more information about this profession, check out the National Athletic Trainers Association website at nata.org. NIC's Athletic Training program provides students with the opportunity to work with athletes from nine highly competitive varsity sports, while under the direct supervision of a certified athletic trainer.

Students interested in transferring to a four-your institution to earn a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training and/or Sports Medicine should complete the NIC Associate of Science requirements for Physical Education and the following Athletic Training Option courses:

  • BIOL 207 Concepts in Human Nutrition
  • CAOT 182 Medical Terminology
  • PE 204 Clinical Athletic Training
  • PE 248 Care & Prevention of Athletic Injuries
Randy Boswell, MA, LAT, ATC

Head Athletic Trainer

Randy Boswell is in his 19th year as North Idaho College’s athletic trainer. After playing baseball and earning a bachelor’s degree at Point Loma Nazarene College, he earned a master’s degree from San Diego State University. Boswell was invited to be an athletic trainer at the 2003-2008 U.S. National Freestyle/Greco Championships in Las Vegas and the 1999, 2002, and 2003 World Cup of Wrestling. He was also chosen to work the Pan-American Wrestling Championships in Mexico in 2010 as well as the 2011 Jr. Pan-American Wrestling Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He and his wife Jennifer live in the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene area and are the proud parents of daughter Brayden and son Ethan.

Melissa Spacek

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Melissa Spacek joins North Idaho College for her first year as the assistant athletic trainer. Spacek returned to school in 2007, earning an associate’s degree in 2007 and a bachelor’s degree in athletic training, with a minor in coaching from Eastern Washington University in 2011. Spacek performed clinical work with EWU’s football team in 2009-2010 and Cheney High School in 2010-2011. She also volunteered with the EWU club hockey team in 2008, the Pacific Northwest Qualifying volleyball tournament in 2009, and the State 2B basketball tournament in 2010. In addition, Spacek worked with the athletic training staff at the EWU football and volleyball camps and the Gonzaga University basketball and volleyball camps from 2009-2011. Spacek grew up in Spokane Valley, Wash., where she still resides with her son J.T. and daughter Casey.
